Developmental
Developmental editing focuses on "the big picture" and plays an important role in your story's development.
Your editor will delve into the finer points of your manuscript. In creative writing, this can include examining your story's plot (and potential holes), character arcs/characterisation and thematic coherence, pacing, action sequences, dialogue, how the manuscript handles difficult topics and more.
It's important to note that developmental editing typically occurs before the manuscript is set in stone. Your editor will work with you to refine your story's plot and offer suggestions for your review. These suggestions can come as in-line comments or a developmental report. In my case, I provide both for a comprehensive overview of what is working well in your story and what might be improved upon.
Developmental edits usually include two readings of the manuscript (one to offer suggestions and one to review how the suggestions have improved the manuscript).
Copyediting
Copyediting (sometimes used interchangeably with 'line editing'—though they are different) focuses on the craft of writing.
Copyeditors review the technical aspects of writing, checking spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax and overall sentence and paragraph flow to ensure that your writing is technically 'correct.'
When combined with line editing—as I do in my own work—your editor will not only ensure your writing is grammatically correct but also elevate its overall quality. By reviewing your style and tone for consistency and coherence, a copy/line editor can enhance the clarity, flow and impact of your writing has on intended readers.
Copyediting usually involves edits made directly to the manuscript (via Word's Tracked Changes) for the author's review, with additional comments that include further suggestions in the body of the text.
Copy/line edits typically include one read of the manuscript.
Proofreading
Proofreading is typically the final step in the editing process. It focuses on meticulously reviewing the manuscript to ensure it is entirely error-free before printing.
Proofreaders will examine the text for typographical errors such as misspellings, misplaced punctuation and inconsistencies in formatting.
With strong attention to detail, your editor will read your manuscript word by word and ensure that all lingering errors have been resolved. They will also check the overall layout of the document, making sure that the text is aligned correctly, the headings and subheadings are consistent and the font styles and sizes remain uniform from start to finish.
As copy/line editing will have already been reviewed for grammar and flow, proofreaders review at a high level, correcting only the smallest of errors, such as lingering double spaces, an unindented line or uncapitalised proper nouns.
By ensuring that the document appears visually appealing and is easily readable, you enhance the reader's experience and ensure that your manuscript reflects your credibility as an author.

About Me
With years of editing and industry experience, I help authors refine their writing while preserving their unique voice.
I love working on inspiring stories and enjoy entertaining, thought-provoking reads. From wandering a circus at night, sailing a small boat with Richard Parker and traversing the Shire with four little Hobbits, I've found my home among the pages of many books and now love to make each one I work on as inspiring.
With a first-class English Language and Literature degree and years of experience working as an Editor at a publishing house, I decided to dedicate my attention to running my own business for editorial services in 2025 and have had the pleasure of working on many inspiring stories since.
